What does the Bible mean when it speaks of “grace”? In this introductory message to a new series entitled **Unpacking Grace**, Pastor Ben Winslett considers the meaning of the New Testament word χάρις (charis), its use in the first-century world, and the beautiful way Scripture employs it to describe God’s favor toward His people. Grace speaks of favor, gift, benefaction, and kindness freely bestowed. In the ancient world, it could even describe the favor of a benefactor toward someone who could never repay him. Scripture takes this familiar concept and uses it to describe something infinitely greater: the gracious work of God in the salvation of sinners. From Noah finding grace in the eyes of the Lord, to the New Testament declarations that salvation is “by grace,” this message lays the groundwork for the weeks ahead as we consider grace in connection with the various aspects of our deliverance from sin. “And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” — John 1:16 #UnpackingGrace #Grace #SovereignGrace #SalvationByGrace #BibleStudy #ChristianSermon #PrimitiveBaptist #FlintRiverPrimitiveBaptist #Charis #John1 #Ephesians2 #BiblicalGrace
Unpacking Grace | Introduction | Part 1
What happens when someone truly cannot take care of themselves? In the ancient world, there was no Social Security or modern safety net. A widow without family could easily become destitute. But in the New Testament, Paul gave the church specific instructions concerning widows who were truly in need and had no family to provide for them. Caring for the helpless isn't merely a nice idea. It is part of the responsibility Christ gave His church. Before considering Christ’s messages to the seven churches of Asia Minor in Revelation 2 and 3, we first need to consider the authority behind those messages. In this first part of A Statement on Authority, we begin in Revelation chapter 1 and consider the divine authority behind this book, from Jesus Christ through John and the angel who delivered the message. We also consider the special blessing pronounced upon those who read, hear, and keep the words of this prophecy. This message serves as an introduction to our upcoming series through the Seven Churches of Asia. A Statement on Authority (Part 1)
In the first century, life was incredibly difficult for people who were blind, deaf, paralyzed, leprous, or otherwise unable to work. There were no disability benefits or modern safety nets. If you couldn't work, you often had to beg or starve. Then Peter encountered a man who had been unable to walk from birth. Peter had no silver or gold to give him, but he had something far greater: the name of Jesus Christ. And the man who had spent his life begging suddenly stood, walked, leaped, and praised God. When Begging Was the Only Option
There is a striking contrast between the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament gave explicit commands about caring for the poor, yet people found loopholes and ways around those commands. In the New Testament, Christians were moved by the love of Christ to care for the poor because they understood how much Christ had loved them. The difference is more than simply having a command. It is the beauty of serving others from a heart that has been changed by grace. Old vs New Testament, Caring for the Poor | When Love Changes How We Care
In the ancient world, unwanted babies could be exposed, abandoned, or left to die. Christians came along and said, “Give us the babies you don’t want. We’ll take them.” What we sometimes look at today as a sad circumstance was, in many cases, a far better alternative to what abandoned children faced in the ancient world. The Christian concern for the helpless has a history. It came from the teachings of Christ and the command to remember the poor. In this concluding message on Jesus’ letters to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, we come to the Church at Laodicea in Revelation 3:14-22. Unlike the other churches, Laodicea receives no commendation from Christ, only rebuke. They were wealthy, prosperous, and self-sufficient, yet spiritually they were poor, blind, and lukewarm. Their condition reminds us that what looks like strength and success on the outside may conceal great spiritual need. Yet even in His rebuke, Christ speaks of His love and gives His people the answer. He calls them to recognize their true condition, seek the riches that come from Him, and open the door to fellowship with their Lord. This message considers the dangers of pride, prosperity, cultural influence, and lukewarmness, while reminding us that our true strength has never been found in ourselves. It is found in Christ. #Laodicea #Revelation3 #SevenChurches #BookOfRevelation #JesusChrist #BibleSermon #PrimitiveBaptist #Sermon

The Bible teaches us to remember the poor and care for those who cannot care for themselves. But where did that concern for the helpless come from? There was a time when these kinds of safety nets simply did not exist. Something happened that changed the world, split history in two, and changed the way people thought about caring for others. What Happened to Change the World? – Safety Nets
In this final message from Matthew 25, we continue our study of Jesus’ teaching concerning the acts of mercy shown by His people, as reported to them in the final Judgment. We consider how acts of mercy demonstrate that our faith is authentic, and how Scripture connects genuine faith with a willingness to help others and meet their needs. Pastor Ben also considers the urgency of showing mercy, the importance of sacrifice and hospitality, and what it means to minister to Jesus Himself by ministering to His people. This is part two of “Expanding on Acts of Mercy.” Radio broadcast for September 27, 2026. http://flintriverpbc.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/episode-0978-–-09-27-26-expanding-acts-mercy-pt2.mp3 Expanding on Acts of Mercy (Part 2) | Matthew 25 (http://flintriverpbc.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/episode-0978-–-09-27-26-expanding-acts-mercy-pt2.mp3)
