I would just remind you that if I'm complaining about anything, I'm not being thankful in that moment. And so, if I spent more time this past week complaining than I spent being thankful, I missed the point of thanksgiving. Psalm 103 is very close to that in your Bibles: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Forget not His benefits." He forgives you. He redeems you. He satisfies you. He executes righteousness and judgment on behalf of the oppressed. He's made known His ways. And so, as the psalmist writes here, "Bless the Lord, O my soul." Gratitude: The True Spirit of Thanksgiving
Trinitarianism is in Isaiah 6. I'll give you one more. Trinitarianism is in Genesis chapter one. "In the beginning God," the Father, said the word, the Son, "let there be light," and there was light. And the Spirit, the what? "Did move upon the face of the waters." Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Genesis chapter one. The Bible is Trinitarian. It's why the word Elohim, which is a plural term for deity, is used with reference to God throughout the Old Testament. They were not polytheistic. God is one God, and yet this one God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. "Holy, holy, holy," let us make man in our own image. "Us" and "our," and yet this God is a "thee" and a "thou," a singular. And by the way, no, your brain can't comprehend that. Remember, you can't see God. You can't approach unto Him. You can't comprehend Him. He's above and beyond. Incommunicable. Unable to be perceived. And yet, He is. And by faith, we know Him, and we believe Him, and we believe in Him, and we trust Him, and we feel His presence even today. Discover Trinitarianism in Isaiah and Genesis: A Divine Insight
We love Him because He first loved us. If you think, "Well, I choose to follow Him," it's because He first chose you. If you think, "I love Him," it's because He first loved you. If you think, "Well, I worship Him, and I want to worship Him," it's because He has drawn you unto Himself. We all have our personal "In the beginning, God" moment as it relates to our walk with Christ in the world. We love Him because He loved us, and as we emphasized, He sent His Son into the world to die for us. Number two: God is love, and so everyone born of God possesses this agape trait of love. If God is love, and if God is in you, then love is a part of your personality. Wherever you look out in this world and you see people who are doing things based upon and motivated by this Christ-like type of love, then mark my word, God lives within them. You do not get love in the heart of a person when people, by nature, are hateful and hating one another, as we read in Titus chapter 3. You do not get love in their heart. This real love. We whittled it down, we clarified it, and there are caveats we gave you last week. Go listen to the message if you missed it. You don't get a person who has love without God being within them. We have one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Not me, not other preachers, not you, not your parents, not your kids, not your friends. The one mediator between God and man is Christ Jesus. And so, that tiny and yet infinite space between the finger of God and your finger, as represented in the Sistine Chapel, that space is made up by the man Christ Jesus, who stood between us and the God we offended. And so, how can we approach unto God? By Him, do we come unto God. He is the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes unto the Father but by Him. Now, I just want to stop right here and make this point, as we think about the fact that God is invisible. Because so many times, one of the points that secularists and atheists will use to scoff at your religion is: "You believe in an invisible sky daddy that you’ve never seen." No! Look, I’m going to tell you several ways today that you can see God, but I want you to understand—He is invisible. When someone throws that at you: “Well, you believe in a God that you cannot see.” I want you to ask them this question: Do you see the air? That is the wind. And when they say, “Well, I can see the leaves.”—That’s not the wind. You see the leaves, but do you see the wind? No. Do you know it’s there? Do you somehow say, “Well, the wind must not be there because I can’t see it. These leaves are animating on their own?” They have a special place for you at the hospital if you think the leaves are alive and running around in circles in the air. They’re obviously being moved by something—the wind, though it be invisible. God is invisible, but that does not mean that He does not exist. So, remember that. Moses is walking through the desert. And again, I remind you—it’s the backside of the desert. He looks, and there’s a bush that burned—but it wasn’t consumed. And he says, Huh… there’s a bush that’s burning, but it’s not consumed. I reckon I’m going to have a look at this. Which is exactly what you and I would do. Something is on fire! Remember—they don’t have social media. They don’t have smartphones. They don’t have TV. They don’t have electricity. So, when you’re standing out there, watching the sheep, and you’re kind of bored—because, literally, that’s all life consisted of: ✔ Watch the sheep. ✔ Find the food. ✔ Take them to water. ✔ Drink the water. ✔ Go to sleep. ✔ Wake up. ✔ Do it again. And then—Oh! There’s a bush. And it’s on fire! But…it’s not burning? It’s just glowing? I don’t know what it is. So, I’m going to go and look at it. And as Moses approaches, several things are told to him: 🔥 He is told to remove his shoes, for the ground that he stands on is holy. 🔥 He is in the presence of God. 🔥 He is given a task: to go and tell Pharaoh—Let my people go! 🔥 He is even given a name for God to tell the people: And what is that name? “I AM” hath sent me unto you. “I AM.” That’s My Name. That’s what you need to tell them. I AM THAT I AM. Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, ‘I AM’ hath sent me unto you. Moses saw God in a bush that burned—but was not consumed. If we lose this savor—if we lose our value, if we lose what makes us a distinct flavor, if we lose our preserving effect—then we are good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under the foot of men. In Jesus’ day, some have said that salt was used to kill vegetation, and that is still one of its uses today. Literally, if salt is cast out to kill vegetation—let’s say, on a Roman road where grass, weeds, or other vegetation didn’t need to grow—well, it would literally be trodden, stepped on by the feet of men. Now, likewise, we face reproach, disdain, and perhaps even the judgment of God if we lose our savor as well. The blessings we have—we have in connection with Christ, and we are called to be a peculiar people. We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people. If we lose what makes us different, well… we have no further purpose in the world. And so, that’s a terrifying threat. That’s an alarming warning from God: If we are not living up to what we are called to be, we will be cast out.
