Trying the Spirits | 1 John 4:1-6
You may think I’m making that up, but I’ve seen this—where well-meaning preachers will tell people who have already believed in Him, who have been believing in Him for some time, that they almost have to go through a sort of, uh, official transactional act of "accepting Him," as if they're officially taking possession of Him or something. When they’ve already been believing that He’s the Christ, that He died for their sins, that He is the Son of God, etc., they’re pressured to "accept Him" to be genuinely saved individuals—despite the fact they’re already believers. But Scripture simply gives believers the assurance. It doesn’t say, “For God so loved the world that whosoever goes through the transaction of accepting Him and officially getting saved after believing.” It simply says, “Whosoever believeth.” And again, they believe because they’re born of the Spirit of God. Obedience and Answered Prayers
If they were born again, there was something about the way He spoke—even if they couldn't articulate it—their hearts burned within them. Why? Because that is Jesus speaking to them. That new nature in them is hungry for that, and so it speaks to something that is within them. That's what happens when a person hears the gospel and, in this sense, receives Christ. They believe on Him, and that's what Paul is talking about here. Well, here's the admonition: If you believe in Jesus, walk in Him. Obey Him. Keep His commandments. Live for Him. Worship Him. Preach Him. Love Him. Let your life reflect what you have in the Lord Jesus Christ. Living Faithfully: The Call to Walk in Christ
What would grow in that field was through hard work and dedication—in bright, hot sunlight, in the wind, and in the rain. When you plow, and you grow, and when you come to reap, look at Leviticus chapter 19: "When you reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. Thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of the vineyard. Thou shalt leave them for the poor and the stranger. I am the Lord your God." And I love that He puts that on there, because the reaction is, “Well, who do you think you’re telling me? Who do you think you are to tell me to do that, Moses?” No, no, no, no. “I am the Lord your God. I’m God, and I’m telling you to do it, so do it.” They were not allowed to harvest the corners of their field. Why? Biblical Wisdom Leave Harvest for the Needy!
Who were the first on the ground after those tornadoes desecrated Appalachia? Christians. Organizations like Samaritan’s Purse and other local Christian associations all jumped into action. Before the government even knew what was happening—when they were still twiddling their thumbs, like, “We’re on vacation. Wait, there was a storm? What storm?”—Christians were on the ground, giving people food, helicoptering people in and out off of their roofs. And God was what in all of that? He was glorified. And it’s amazing to see. Now let me just tell you—it is more important than ever for us to be people who walk in love. Because the world around us is growing more dark, more hostile, more angry, more bitter, and more venomous. If I open my mouth, and out of the abundance of my heart I speak, and what comes out of my mouth are words of cruelty, judgment, and anger, it’s because the world rubs off on us. It’s so important for us today to be conscious. Because the world is so angry, even if you’re not angry, when you walk around that smoke, you’re going to start smelling like it too. It’s going to have an effect on you.
