Isaiah describes the Messiah with these remarkable words: “Behold my servant, whom I uphold.” But why would God uphold Christ if Jesus is Himself God incarnate? In this excerpt from a sermon preached at Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, we consider the wonder of the incarnation. Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man—very God and very man in one glorious Person. As the eternal Son, He possesses all the fullness of deity, yet He also took upon Himself a true human nature, body and soul, without sin. As the perfect Man, Christ lived in complete dependence upon the Father. He was impeccable—unable to be corrupted or overcome by sin—and throughout His earthly ministry the Father upheld Him in the work He came to accomplish. The incarnation is one of Scripture’s deepest mysteries and greatest comforts: Immanuel, God with us, came to redeem His people and perfectly fulfilled every task the Father gave Him. Christ Could Not Fail
In this message, we conclude our study of the ordinances of the Lord’s church by considering the Lord’s Supper, also known as Communion. Instituted by Jesus Christ during the Passover meal, this ordinance serves as a continual remembrance of His sacrificial death and points forward to His glorious return. We examine the biblical foundation of Communion, its connection to the Old Testament Passover, the symbolism of the unleavened bread and wine, and the purpose Christ gave His church in observing this sacred ordinance. The Ordinances: The Lord's Supper
How can God’s people continue trusting Him when life brings suffering, loss, uncertainty, and hardship? We Trust in God, Part 2
When the woman taken in adultery stood surrounded by her accusers, the religious crowd was ready to destroy her. Stones were in hand. Judgment was prepared. But then Jesus spoke: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone." One by one, the accusers walked away. In this excerpt from a sermon preached at Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, we see the heart of Christ toward broken sinners. After her accusers departed, Jesus asked, "Woman, where are thine accusers?" When she answered that she had none, He replied, "Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more." What a picture of the bruised reed and the smoking flax. Christ did not excuse sin, but neither did He crush the sinner. He dealt with her in mercy, compassion, and grace. The same Savior who showed tenderness to the woman taken in adultery and to the woman who washed His feet with her tears is still the gentle Savior of His people today. Neither Do I Condemn Thee
The world admires strength, success, influence, and popularity. Yet Jesus Christ is drawn to the weak, the wounded, and the broken. In this excerpt from a sermon preached at Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, we see two remarkable truths about our Savior. First, He did not seek fame or attention for Himself. Even after performing miracles, He often told people, "Go tell no one." Second, Isaiah prophesied that "a bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench." A bruised reed is already damaged. A smoking wick has nearly gone out. Both are fragile, vulnerable, and seemingly of little use. Yet Christ does not discard them. Jesus Doesn't Break the Weak #compassion
The lesson of the bruised reed isn't about someone else. It's about you. It's about me. Have you ever been weak? Have you ever been damaged? Have you ever felt discouraged, wounded, exhausted, or broken? Of course you have. The amazing truth of Isaiah's prophecy is that Christ does not cast off His people when they are weak. In this excerpt from a sermon preached at Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, we're reminded that we are the bruised reed and the smoking flax. And Jesus, in His tenderness and mercy, does not break His beloved children because they are wounded. He does not abandon them because they are struggling. What a contrast between the harsh spirit of legalism and the compassion of Christ. While others may see weakness as a reason to condemn, Jesus sees His beloved child and responds with mercy. Jesus's Comfort A Beautiful Lesson for the Damaged
One of the most beautiful descriptions of Jesus in all of Scripture is this: "A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench." A bruised reed is already damaged. A smoking wick has almost gone out. There's little light, little heat, and only a faint ember remains. Yet Isaiah tells us that this is exactly the kind of person Christ deals with so gently.
