I come from a generation which was closer to the split, than we are today, when those were not among us went out from us, because they were not of us 1st John 2:19. When men have fought a hard battle, or have been attacked they become overly defensive, as is our nature, to defend what they are fighting for. The truth of God in Christ Jesus, true doctrine, is worthy of and must be defended. The generation from which I came had taken such a hard stance, Anything those who left us were for, we were against. We can find many things which we should do, which we do not do, ( as Gods children ), but let me spend the limited space for this article on evangelism. As I can testify of, in my childhood days there were very few children in the church. It was said, in defense of the truth, that God could and would do all that needed to be done. This is true! Yet God will not do for us, what He has given for us to do. Scripture teaches us to teach Gods true doctrine to our children and to bring them up in nurture and admonition of God. I heard it said back then, I will not tell my children how to believe or worship, now we wonder why they are not here. If one of a young age asked for a home in the church they were told that they were too young. I have even heard that you should not join the church until the Lord drags you in by the hair of your head. Today we see many more children in the old church. We have a great responsibility to God for them.

I am not condemning the pillars of the church of yesterday who stood in defense of the truth. they have fought a hard fight, and by Gods grace are victorious. They are examples of living in faith with complete trust in Christ Jesus.

Let's go to scripture. The apostle Paul in 2nd Timothy 4:5 " But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

In 1st Peter 5, the Holy Spirit says feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof not by constraint, but willingly. The pastor, teacher is to preach and teach the flock of God. Jesus said to Peter to feed my lambs, and to feed my sheep, young and old alike.

Ephesians 4:11 shows us the gifts God gave unto men. There were apostles; prophets; evangelists; pastors and teachers. The apostles are gone, the prophets are gone, the evangelist who, working with the apostles and prophets brought the gospel news of salvation, in Jesus Christ The Son Of God, to the elect of God among the Gentiles are gone. Salvation has been declared, Jew and Gentile alike. The Apostle Paul said in Colossians 1:23 that this gospel which was preached to every creature which is under heaven. The gospel has come to the Gentiles. This has been done. What remains today of the gifts is pastor, teacher. That does not mean that we are not to evangelize. Scripture says do the work of an evangelist. An evangelist is not a preacher who travels a long way to church on Sunday. I serve a church in another state, I drive three hours there and three hours back. This does not make me an evangelist. I hope to be their pastor, teacher, I am overjoyed to be among them. Just because I drive a long way does not make me an evangelist.
The definition of the word according to Strongs concordance is one who brings, one who bears, one who spreads good news.

Salvation has come to the Gentiles, this is past tense. God saved, past tense, and yet God saves on a daily basis those whom He calls into the church. The preached word does not save them eternally. Jesus did that work. Yet 1st Corinthians 1:21 teaches us that it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Who believes, those Jesus saved. Who do we preach to? The children of God. How do they hear? By revelation of Christ by God's Holy Spirit. What is the saving? That in the hearing and teaching of true gospel preaching they learn how to save themselves from this untoward generation in which we live here in this world. They learn how to live and enjoy the life God gave them. They learn how to live and survive daily in this world of sin. Are we not to preach? It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching. What is the purpose? we cannot save souls to glory, Jesus finished that work on Calvary's cross. Why do we preach?

2nd Thessalonians 2:14 answers that, HE called you by our gospel. The gifts are given unto men. We cannot save souls. We cannot spread the gospel. We cannot regenerate men. It is all of God. We are simply a vessel He uses. The church does not have the authority to send men to preach, the Holy Spirit does. Recently men have condemned church bodies which are built upon the foundation of Jesus Christ because men have gone there in the ministry to evangelize. What does scripture say? Do the work of an evangelist! If the Spirit leads, the man better follow. The Lord did not give us gifts to sit upon them. He gave us gifts to use.

Some are upset over one church, the Philippines, but rejoice over the church being established in Africa. The Philippine brethren asked for help, they were not sought out by the ministers who are here. They sought out the people who had true doctrine because God had given them a hunger for it. They still have that hunger today. If there is something there which is wrong, look to the men who taught them wrong, and not the body of the church which is seeking truth. Elder Obey came here from Africa seeking the truth. God delivered it. Should we not be rejoicing over this? God is on His throne! In this world of darkness should we not rejoice over Gods true light being given to His own and Jesus being glorified. In the land of anti-christ Muslim rule the finished work of the Son of God is preached and prospering. Every kindred, tongue, people and nation. The Lord established His witness in Africa and the Philippines. This is glorious and God is glorified. Man has not done it, It is of God.

The Apostle Paul said in Romans 1:16, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ".

I know that we are not ashamed of His gospel, He is our first love.

The old school ministers of yesterday, (before the split), went house to house in the community. If we study the writings of these old school, old line Baptist ministers, we find that they all taught evangelism, because scripture teaches evangelism. they did not use bible tracts, flyers or other man-made devices, they preached Jesus, the Lord added daily such as should be saved then, He does the same now. Today we need to preach. The land in which we live is falling quickly. We may not have the right to free assembly to worship without persecution soon. Our government is stealing our freedom every day.

The purpose of the ministry,
Ephesians 4:12 "for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
"Make full proof of thy ministry. Do the work of an evangelist."

I hope that all who read this will search the scripture. We desire to be and believe that we are in the order and doctrine of the true church that Jesus established here for us. May God grant us grace to lay aside our fleshly emotions and jealousy, may we follow the teaching of Christ.

Pray for me, Elder Vaughn Winslett
