Train Up a Child

The following is a great quote on the importance of raising our children in the Church. My mind has been on this thought since visiting Bethlehem PBC this past weekend, as they have many children in the congregation being actively raised in the church.

Curious about the Church? Here's a summary of what we believe

Below is part of an email response I wrote to a man curious about the Church.

I would encourage you to consider the doctrines of Grace as believed by Primitive Baptists. We believe in Sovereign Grace, that God is sovereign in saving men. He chose us, we did not choose Him. These doctrines are generally broken down into the following:

Two reasons God created Marriage

Two reasons why God created the institution of marriage:

1) To grant companionship. It was not good that man, Adam, should be alone. Marriage is God's gift of friendship and fellowship for a lifetime. Genesis 2:18

2) To populate the earth and subdue it. Genesis 1:28

"I wish, in one way, that we were like some of our brethren in African where church is concerned. Church begins when everyone arrives and it ends when its over. They don't wear watches." - Elder Mike Ivey

Receive Not The Grace of God in Vain

"We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain." - 2 Corinthians 6:1

"But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." - 1 Corinthians 15:10

The grace of God brings eternal salvation (Titus 2:11). Eternal salvation cannot be lost, hence the word "eternal". It is a sovereign act of Divine power. However, you can receive this grace "in vain." How so? By living a life guided by the flesh after being born again.

This saving grace bestowed upon the Apostle Paul was not in vain because he LABORED for Christ. God saved you because He loves you. At the same time, He changed you so you can serve Him! Your former master, sin, has been destroyed. Why serve a dead master? Serve Christ!

Has Delivered, Doth Deliver, Will Deliver

"[God] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us..." 2 Corinthians 1:10

God has delivered (past tense) us from a great death in depravity, referring to the New Birth. He also 'doth' deliver us (present tense), referring to daily deliverance from many ills such as error and sinfulness while we live here. And yet, we trust that one day He will deliver us (future tense) from the presence sin and death itself in Heaven.

A study note, the word 'Deliver' is a synonym for the word 'Save." Deliverance is salvation. (Compare Joel 2:32 with Acts 2:21 in a KJV.)

Ye Have Not So Learned Christ

"But ye have not so learned Christ; if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt..." - Ephesians 4:20-22

Notice the Biblical order of things. First, a sinner has 'heard Him' and has been 'taught by Him.' This language pertains to the new birth which is a call to life by the very 'voice' of Christ (See John 5:25). During this instantaneous call, the laws of God are written upon the very heart of the sinner, in essence being 'taught by Him' (See Hebrews 8:10). After this, it is the job of the ministry to exhort the changed sinner to a life of conformity to God's word, in essence putting off the 'old man' (former behavior) and putting on the 'new man' (behavior in accord with the new nature now given). The first was accomplished solely by Christ. The second is an act of obedience - a choice made by a living sinner - through the power of Christ. That this is the correct order of things is summed as 'the truth in Christ.' This is reality.

If you mourn your sins and believe in Christ, you are spiritually alive. Your duty now is to forsake your former lifestyle and pursue a life reflecting the life of your Savior.
