Why We Do What We Do

Elder Matt Jordan

From Rocky Mount Newsletter, January 2014.

In recent years, our congregation has experienced a renewed desire to reach out in many different ways to the community around us. As their pastor, I say this, not boasting, but in grateful humility. It is indeed a great privilege to try to serve a body of believers who have developed this kind of servant’s heart. These efforts range from various means of communicating God’s word, to sharing prayer requests and church information, to ministering to the poor and needy. More than once over the last couple of years, I’ve been asked about some of these things. Typically, the questions would be along the lines, “why is your church doing all those things” or, “what kind of results have you seen”. These are actually pretty good questions to consider, but perhaps from a different standpoint than the manner in which the questions have been asked. The purpose of this short article is to consider those questions but first, allow me to describe some of these things that I’m talking about.

Hearts Hardened Through Deception of Sin
Written by Admin
Tuesday, 31 December 2013 14:13

"But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin." Hebrews 3:13

In this verse, the writer of Hebrews is addressing believers. As he says in verse 1, "Holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling." Did you know that the nature of sin we all possess (1 John 1:9) can deceive you to such an extent that your heart becomes hardened? This is applicable to believers - not the unregenerate. Believers are in danger!

Comments on Matthew 25:31-46
Written by Josh Winslett
Friday, 27 December 2013 16:02

There are many contradicting and conflicting views of Matthew 25:31-46 in Christendom. Some believe it to be a parable describing the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD or some other temporal judgment. Others view this text as describing the end of this physical existence and the general judgment. There are even sub views divided among those who believe in the sovereignty of God in salvation and those who believe in a works based salvation. In this short article, I would like to discuss a few of these views.

Characteristics of a Thriving Church
Written by Benjamin C. Winslett

The past 100 years have not been kind to the Primitive Baptists in regards to total membership and number of churches. Rather than growing, or even holding our own, churches have often declined in number, some even to death, and the average age of those in our congregations has steadily increased leaving few to replace departing saints at the end of their respective lives. Supposedly, in an era in which the population of our country increased by over 300 million, our numbers decreased by half.

This is not exclusively a PB problem. In the largest denomination in North Alabama, the Southern Baptists, nearly 9 out of 10 youths (88%) leave the church as they enter college.i While some mega-churches seem to go against this trend, average attendance in the nation's largest denominations is on the decline. ii Spirituality in America is greatly shifting for the worse.

I am reminded of the words of a friend who once remarked “Never show me the statistics!” Indeed. But, but rather than be the proverbial ostrich with my head firmly placed in the sand, I hope I will heed the words of Haggai the prophet and “consider my ways.” iii

Seven Gifts in the Church
Written by Michael Ivey
Friday, 22 November 2013 19:47

In 1Co 12 Paul identified several gifts, some of which were sign gifts which were unique to the first century church, such as the miraculous ability to speak a foreign language without any prior knowledge of the language. In Eph 2:20 Paul distinguished the foundational gifts of prophets and apostles which were also unique to the first century church. In Eph 4:11 he identified the ministerial gifts of evangelist and pastor/teacher which yet exist. In Ro 12 Paul identified seven additional gifts which are yet found in the church. They are prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, giving, ruling, and showing mercy. The context of Ro 12 indicates that these gifts are not restricted by church office. They are found among the membership in general. He makes no distinction as to the value of one category of gift over another, indicating that the gifts are given as a measure of God's grace. He suggests that not every member has every gift and also notes that there are different administrations of the same gifts. That is, the use or application of the same gift may be different from one person to the next. Paul tells us that gifts are to be used in proportion to one's faith. From this we may conclude that God directs the proper use of gifts. The numerous administrations and operations of these seven gifts attend to the physical, emotional and, to a certain degree, spiritual necessities of church members. There is no circumstance of essential physical or emotional need that, from a godly perspective, cannot be addressed by the various ministrations of one or more of the gifts.
