Recently, my two sons attended the funeral of a friend. The young lady, who was only 18 years old, was in our eyes a good girl. She showed evidence of the Lord in her life. A man who calls himself Reverend spoke at the funeral. As he stood above the child's body he gave what the blind call an alter call. The man asked the young children present, since there were many, to bow their heads and raise their hands if they wanted to "accept Jesus." He said he would then pray the Lord into their hearts.
Not only is this sickening, it is a lie and an insult to God. I can think of no other time when the Lord is more glorified and more present in our life than at death. The Lord has taken us from this body of sin and our soul is alive with him.
The apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians Ch 15 begins by declaring the gospel you have received and wherein ye stand. Paul is not giving it, the Lord is (Romans 6:17). Paul is only the vessel. The entire chapter is concentrated on the resurrection of the body. How that by man came death, and by the Son of God who became the Son of Man, came life. This is the gospel. The body which has to die due to sin is raised up by the power of the Spirit of God.
The reverend told the people at the funeral that he hoped this girl had "accepted Jesus." He, being blind, could not see the evidence in her life.
In John 5:25, the Lord said that now is the time that the dead should hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. This young girl showed evidence that she heard and that God had quickened her giving her life (Ephesians 2:1).
In John 5:28, the Lord said marvel not at this for the hour is coming in which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice and shall come forth. Every body which has ever been conceived shall come forth from the ground. The just and the unjust, the good and the evil, those the Lord saved and those he did not. The just unto the resurrection of life, eternal glory with God. The unjust unto eternal damnation (John 5:29), everlasting fire (Matthew 25:41), burning brimstone (Revelation 19:20), the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15).
Back to the gospel which Paul declared, it is good news to see one who shows evidence of God's Spirit working in them to leave this world of sin. They are with God awaiting the resurrection of the body.
Let us sorrow not as others who have no hope, our hope is in Jesus who died for us, and raised up His own body that our bodies should live.
Glorify God, heed the gospel if you can hear it, let him that preacheth another gospel (and there is not another), be accursed.
May the Lord be glorified in all things,
