Brief Note on Anointing PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ben Winslett

Studying through 1 John presently on the radio brought to mind some interesting facts about the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

John uses the word "anointing" with reference to the work of the Spirit. In the Old Testament, anointing had two purposes:

1. Priests were anointed to ceremonially prepare them for their ministerial work. This was described as an act that both consecrated and sanctified them.

2. A shepherd would anoint the head of his sheep, to heal them from maddening infestations of insects. This act was to bring healing and protection.

Compare that with the work of the Spirit in our lives. The Spirit prepares and enables us, as priests unto God. Also, the Spirit brings healing to us. Obviously, we have healing from the depraved state we are in through Adam, but also on a daily basis we find healing from guilt, shame, lies, etc., when we pursue Christ.

Is there a direct correlation between miracles and belief? In other words, do miracles performed by Christians guarantee that unbelievers will believe in Jesus Christ? This dynamic was recently posed to me in discussion. Without consideration of the ongoing debate concerning apostolic gifts, let’s seek to answer this question.

Rainbows In Your Rearview Mirror PDF Print E-mail

Last week I was on the road for four days traveling for work and church in Tennessee. I was sick most of the week so it had not been the most fun trip overall. As I was beginning my return trip, after driving through a stiff rain and pretty strong winds for quite a few miles, the rain cleared and then I saw a rainbow in my rearview mirror. It was interesting because when I drive through what appeared to be that rainbow’s location (maybe 5 miles back) I could not see anything in that place but rain, strong winds, and storm clouds. Even though I only saw the storm when I was in the midst of it, after I passed on and the effects of the storm had calmed, I could look back in hindsight in my rearview mirror and see the rainbow in the exact location that I had just experienced a storm.
