|Are We Already Judged?|

While having lunch with a pastor friend a couple of days after SCOTUS legalized same-sex marriage across the USA, we were conversing about how we should react as believers who happen to live in America. Of course, subjects such as the Kingdom of Heaven, our true citizenship, God's judgment, and how much - if at all - we should involve ourselves in the civil affairs of our physical nation.
I have mixed feelings about it and discourage obsession and extreme involvement. After all, we are citizens of Christ's Kingdom, a Kingdom not of this world. At the same time, Paul utilized his rights as a Roman by protesting being beaten uncondemned and also by appealing to Caesar. So there is a balance one must aim for. As Jesus said, we must be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.
But one comment my friend made sparked a lot of thought. Have we already been judged?
When we think of the judgment of God, especially concerning homosexual behavior, we picture pillars of fire and columns of salt (Sodom, Lot's wife). We picture a global flood, as in Noah's day. We picture the ground opening, and swallowing up detractors as with Korah. Or perhaps we picture serpents plowing through the camp of Israel, biting people with fatal venom. But Romans 1 depicts a different kind of judgment - one which looks strikingly similar to our present situation in America.
"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet." Romans 1:26-28
Because society rejected the knowledge of their true history, the fact that they were created by a Almighty King God, and turned to idolatry and sexual sin, God "gave them over," or let go and released them to their own carnal desires. The result is that they have been released from the protection of God as a society or culture and now will suffer the consequences of their action.
But think about this for a second. What we're seeing in our particular society at present looks like judgment itself! Sure, it isn't pillars of fire, but a different type of judgment: being turned over to a reprobate mind. This is the story of human kind in general, and this pattern has repeated itself several times throughout human history. If one is looking for Divine judgment, he may be surprised to realize that we're already there.
So what do you do in a society already in the judgment of God? Simple: PREACH! Like Jonah to the Ninevites or Paul to the Athenians, preach the gospel of Christ. After all, as members of His Kingdom, that's been our charge from the beginning anyway. Above all, pray for spiritual revival among God's people and good decisions from elected officials.
