"Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you." Matthew 5:11-12
I am praying for a devastated congregation and community in South Carolina this morning. I'm sure you've seen that news that a man entered and opened fire during a prayer meeting last night at an AME Church in Charleston. It's hard to fathom someone wanting to act in such cowardice and attack unarmed folks in their most vulnerable state - praying to God in a place of refuge from the world.
Remember that the King of kings and Lord of lords knows and will avenge. That is certain. It always has been and always will be. God is judge of the quick and dead.
"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." Romans 12:19
Also, let's hope the authorities capture the perpetrator and bring him to justice. The entire point of government in the world is to be a terror to evil. Oh, you thought it was to ban transfats and ensure gender neutral restrooms? No. An avenger of wrath on the wicked. May our rulers be reminded of their charge from Almighty God.
"For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil...For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil." Romans 13
May the God of all grace comfort those affected and mourning from this act of evil.
